Joe Baranko: Directed 1972-1974.
Pete Fuller:
Directed 1974-1975. He is a native of Wetumpka, AL. He graduated from Auburn University. He began teaching in 1963 at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL. He later taught at Carbon Hill High, Wetumpka High, as an assistant under Truman Welch, Holtville, Floyd Jr. High, Calera, Alabama Christian, Houston Hill and Highland Home.
Don Darby:
Directed 1975-1984.Graduated R. E. Lee HS, '65, David Lipscomb University, '70. BS Music Education. Taught HS band 5 years, Alabama Christian HS. Has played in the Montgomery Community Band 1972-2005. Played in the Recreators '74-'85, leader of the recreators '76-'85.
Truman Welch:
Directed 1984-1995. Directed the 13th Air Force Show Band during World War II. Organized the Elmore County HS Band and directed it for 26 years. Originated and organized the Studio Lab Band movement. Organized the first annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic at Troy University in January 1974. Served as Woodwind instructor at Troy University. Flute clinician for Yamaha Musical Instrument Co.
Bobby Collins:
Directed 1995-1999. Directed the Sidney Lanier High School Band in Montgomery, Alabama. Played with the University Cavaliers and the Auburn Knights, and served as Assistant Band Director at Auburn University. He was the principal horn player with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the orchestra for over twenty years. He taught French Horn at Huntingdon College and Troy University, and worked with the Montgomery Youth Orchestra. Bobby passed away on April 15, 2007 at the age of 79.
Rush Gavin:
Directed 1999-2002. Civil Education: B.S-Livingston State Teacher's College; M.A.-Univ. of Alabama; Ed.S.-Auburn Univ.; Admin./Supervision Certification-Troy State Univ.; Additional college credit-Mississippi State Univ.; Univ. of So. Mississippi, Univ. of So. Carolina, Univ. of Wisconsin. Military Education: Basic and Advanced Warrant Course-Ft. Benjamin Harrison; Senior Staff Course-Ft. Rucker, Basic and Senior Band Master Course-School of Music, Norfolk, Virginia. Honors: President-Alabama Bandmasters Assoc.; Teacher of the Year-Muscogee Co. School District, Columbus GA.; Served as Band Director in the public schools of Alabama and Georgia for 34 1/2 years; Served in the Alabama. National Guard for 35 years-28 1/2 years as commander of the Alabama National Guard Band. Served 3 years as Conductor of the Capitol Sounds Concert Band, Montgomery, Alabama.
Don Darby:
Directed September 2002 to August 14, 2003. During this time, he planned and organized the 30th Anniversary Concert that was held April 3, 2003, at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts.
John Jackson
Chosen by the band to be the director on August 14, 2003. John is a native of Ozark, AL. He attended undergraduate and graduate school at Troy University. He received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education in 1995 and a Master's degree in Music Education in 1997. He was a member of the Troy University Band, directed by Dr. John M. Long. Taught band for 11 years, with the last 6 in Montgomery Public Schools. On June 2, 2006, he began his new full-time position as band and music director for the city of Montgomery Parks and Recreation. John and his wife, Amy, have a son, John Scott Jackson II.
